What is Clinical Somatics?
Clinical Somatics uses the technique of pandiculation to relieve chronic pain. We pandiculate when we stretch or yawn, especially when waking up. Humans, along with all vertebrate animals, tend to automatically pandiculate when we wake up. If you’ve ever seen a dog or cat arch their back when they get up from a nap, or watched a baby stretches their arms and legs as they wake up, you’ve witnessed the pandicular response.
Why are my muscles so tight and sore?
Most chronic pain, something that you’ve had for more than 12 weeks, is caused by the way we use our bodies – the way we sit, stand, and move throughout our lives. Our nervous system is responsible for telling us how to use our bodies, which muscles to contract, when to release them, and how to hold our bodies when we’re just sitting or standing still.
The more we repeat a certain posture or movement, the more deeply learned that muscular pattern becomes. Not all the muscular patterns we learn are useful.
How can Clinical Somatics help my chronic pain?
It engages the nervous system in an active learning process that consists of very slow, focused, conscious movements. The movement techniques used teach the nervous system how to release chronic muscle tension so that we can stand and move in a more natural and efficient way.
It’s effective because it addresses the underlying cause of most muscle and joint pain: the way the nervous system functions.
What conditions can Clinical Somatics help?
Back pain, breathing issues, disc problems, forward head posture, hip & knee pain, neck and shoulder tension & pain, plantar fasciitis, sciatica and many more.
Can Clinical Somatics help me?
If your doctor has ruled out disease, infection, or structural damage as being the cause of your problem the answer is yes. It’s fairly safe to say that your pain, recurring injury, or posture or movement issue is a result of the way you’re using your body.
How will I work with you?
The beauty of Clinical Somatics is that once you know the exercises that improve and eliminate chronic pain, you can do them yourself.
After an initial consultation and assessment, I usually work with clients over 4 sessions, spaced a few weeks apart.
Each time we meet we review progress with the exercises provided and then move to the next stage of exercises.
Clients are provided with audio versions of the exercises so that they can do them at home between sessions.
